Even in childhood, painter and sculptor Jay Marsh found art as
a vehicle to express his rich, internal world. “I developed
an under-active thyroid when I was young and with less physical
and social activity, I made strong connections to silence and
the creative spirit.”
Both parents are multi-talented artists, who encouraged and supported
art study and experience, including college. Jay graduated from
the Ringling School of Art and Design in 1991, with a degree in
Illustration and Photography. Once out of school, he worked with
internationally known illustrator Bill Mayer in Decatur, Georgia.
“Through Bill I learned the importance of planning a painting
through a series of ever refined line drawings to use as a map.
Once the drawing is complete, the journey begins with adding value
and color.”
Jay is most passionate exploring the flowing forces of nature.
He enjoys the freedom of moving through a landscape that begins
within and evolves to physical form in acrylic paint or clay.
“The creation begins when my mind is quiet with an all-consuming
vision. The greatest joy is to be within that vision as it is
manifested on a large canvas.”
The images may originate in the natural world, but Jay enfolds
the real with the fanciful. His talent for layering color invites
the viewer into a scene with familiar elements, but altered reality.
While working on a piece, “I am invited to explore a landscape
of absolute freedom and endless possibilities.”
Jay’s goal is to inspire energy and creativity in others
from his work. “Passion comes full circle when you are inspired
by what you see.”
Jay does accept commissions and has completed works for corporate
clients such as Royal Caribbean, Stewart & Stevenson TUG,
Bacardi, WCW Wrestling (AFX Studios), and Clive Barker. Jay also
does murals in the Atlanta area with his brother, Alan Marsh.
An Atlanta native, Jay currently lives in Decatur, Georgia. When
not in the studio, you’ll most likely find Jay unicycling
in the park.
