Egg Tempera & Oil Painting“ with Prof. Phil. Cynthia
Re’Robbins teaching the secrets of under-painting the first

It is indeed a fairy-tale-like magical spot. This will be the
first seminar Prof. Phil has held in the USA in 13 years.......don’t
miss this opportunity!
Northwest Arkansas is one of the "best kept secret"
places. The densely wooded hills, winding roads, many lakes and
rivers all make for a pristine setting. In the midst of the Ozark
Highlands sits a Victorian village so charming you will think
you have stepped back in time and into a fairy tale. There are
no traffic lights, people don't have to lock their doors, and
all he neighbors know one another. Even though it is small, there
is a very high quality and variety of restaurants, shopping, accommodations,
art and music.
SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR FIRST 10 PARTICIPANTS REGISTERED:
Reservations for accommodations are separate from TUITION DEPOSIT.
For our seminar we have co-created a package-deal with breakfast
and lunch included at a charming Bed & Breakfast called THE
PIEDMONT. It is less than 100 yards from the fabulously large
studio space where we will be painting. The Piedmont is giving
us all 10 of their rooms, so register early to get this great
deal. Rooms at the Piedmont will range from $70 - $120 a day depending
on room size, jacuzzi, etc. (with the 2 meals included) and Wi-Fi

to the major cultural art centers of Italy. Less than 2 hours
from Florence, Italy, there are few regions capable, as Umbria,
of exciting and intense emotions.
To a visitor, passing through this region of different contours
and varied character is like entering a dimension in which spiritual
inspiration, artistic legacy and environmental excellence make
a perfect combination. Plunge into the stillness of its undulated
countryside. Lose yourself in the tinted colors of it’s
landscape, similar to those painted by Perugino. It brings us
back to being in harmony with the secret rhythm of a world. The
ancient Umbrian landscape continues to release mysterious life-energies
which gently envelope visitors, stirring their curiosity, intellect
and heart.
Art Farm Gaia occupies a large rural area on the right bank of
the Tevere river, with a spectacular view of the Martani Mountains.
Papiano is about 15 minutes from the city of Perugia and is near
the town of Marsciano, where scattered hamlets and castles of
rare beauty, such as those found in Sant’ Apollinare and
Spina. In Marsciano, oak groves share the environment with the
Mediterranean landscape and the cultivation of vines, olives,
sunflowers and wheat.

"Fa Presto Birgitta"
Fast Oil Painting Technique with Prof.Phil
One Week Seminar
For the Beginning to Accomplished Artist
No Experience Necessary
Monday - Friday: June 23 - 27, 2008
9:00AM - 12:00 NOON and 2:00 - 5:00PM
This approach is named after the professor's first student to
have studied this methodical and liberating manner in building
a picture. During the Renaissance, particularly in Venice, the
taste for grand-scale pictures with a textural style of painting
became widespread. In this workshop, however, we avoid the typically
heavy use of slow-drying impasto under-painting and instead achieve
textural and universal effects in oil painting through a division
of labor and quick-dry mediums. We will employ a very fast-drying
version of the Venetian masters of the Renaissance through utilizing
an under-drawing rendered in ink and washes, followed by layering-in
chromatic schemes of oil color with painting mediums. The participant
will discover an excellent and sound method that is fast and lends
itself to absolutely any style, or means of expression. This is
a contemporary practice of the alchemy of art based on the sound
knowledge of the old masters.
Tuition Only: 275 Euros (+ materials fee: 15 Euros)
Minimum of 15 hours of formal and highly individualized instruction
and
15 hours of informal instruction working along-side the professor.
Contact time: 30 hours
Instruction: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Studio Access is 24 hours/day

"Fa Presto Filippo"
A Fast Drying Renaissance Oil Painting Technique with Prof.Phil
Three Week Seminar with Prof. Phil
For the Beginning to Accomplished Artist
No Experience Necessary
AUGUST 10 - 30 , 2008
Monday - Friday: 9:00AM - 12:00 NOON and 2:00 - 5:00PM
Optional week-end excursions to Florence and other cities and
cultural points of interest.
This approach is adapted after the Venetian painting techniques
used by such Old Masters as Tinterretto (1518-1594)and Veronese
(1527-1588). An over-all emphasis on the 'big look' of the whole
composition is emphasized in the beginning under layers, blocking
in the dark and shadowy masses. The first half of the painting
is done in the Italian manner and the final layers are completed
in the Northern European fashion of Old Masters such as Van Eyck,
Memling and Durer, using hi-lighting with an Cremnitz Oil White
and final glazes with resin-oil colors. We combine the best advantages
of the Italians by building a picture through a limited palette
to create an underlying color unity, while later adding the Flemish
and German advantages of the 'optical greys', neutral tones and
luminosity that can only be achieved through hi-lighting in white
and overlaying glazes of oil color. Employing a very quick-drying
version of the masters of the Renaissance, the participant will
discover an excellent and sound method that is fast and lends
itself to absolutely any style, or means of expression. The full
spectrum of artistic expression from imaginative gestural spontaneity
to an academic realism is encouraged; from a mystical precisionism
to a devotional abstraction of styles. This seminar is an alchemy
of art that mixes the knowledge of the old masters with the contemporary
eye of the painter in an atmosphere of study in which the professor
highly emphasizes individualized instruction tailored to each
participant's personal visual language.*** NOTE: RETURNING ARTISTS/STUDENTS
from previous seminars with Prof Phil may continue their line-of-study
in the technique and methods they have been individually adapting/applying
with the professor.
Tuition Only: 700 Euros (+ materials fee: 25 Euros) Minimum of
45 hours of highly individualized formal instruction and 45 hours
of informal instruction alongside the professor.
Contact time: 90 hours
Instruction: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (noon) and 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Studio Access is 24 hours/day

Along with 12 other artists from all over the world, I attended
the 2004 Old Masters New Visions Seminar in Viechtach, Germany
in June, and want to share what an exceptional experience
it was. It was taught by Prof. Philip Rubinov-Jacobson, whose
instruction was superb. He gave clear explanations and demonstrations,
followed by ample studio hours. He had a well organized plan
allowing us to do several different paintings during the course
of the 3 weeks. There was great individual attention. In fact,
I think this is an aspect of Phil's abilities that is truly
outstanding. He can zero in on one's strengths and weaknesses,
and offer solid guidance in a gentle manner - and always with
lots of humor. |
| |
|
| As a group, we laughed often, we got along, we let each
other paint, we made good friends. The group was really talented
and productive, and it was so inspiring to watch the various
paintings as they developed. Phil had several dynamic paintings
in various stages of completion, that he worked on whenever
he wasn't making the rounds by our easels. It was very helpful
to watch his fearless approach and the way he handles a brush.
His knowledge of color, history, techniques, and all matter
of marvelous trivia is astounding. He generously let us use
his paints when his unusual colors would help us with what
we were creating. |

|
 |
A local artist, Reinhard Schmid, was instrumental in organizing
this event. He got the mayor of the town fully involved, which
resulted in a special rate at the hotel, easels that were
made just for us, printed color brochures, and press coverage
of our exhibition. The mayor invited us all to an elegant
dinner. We felt like royalty. Reinhard is a masterful artist,
and he has a museum that houses the town's Egyptian art collection
along with his own fine paintings. He invited us for a personal
tour of the historic building. He explained the displays and
replicas, and then his own room of glass paintings of the
tarot deck. |
| |
|
| De Es Schwertberger arrived from Vienna, as a guest artist,
and took part in the exhibition. He also gave us a Power Point
presentation of his body of work, explaining the evolution
of his paintings and philosophy. We were in awe of his prolific
and enlightened genius. |
 |
| |
|
| Our Hotel Schmaus was right on the main square and very
nice, with big rooms and friendly staff. Co-Owner Martina
Schmaus was always around to answer questions and help us
find what we needed. Her husband was the head chef, so this
was a place run with a very personal touch. There was a heavenly
pool and sauna, fine dining, great coffee. Our studio space
was glorious, with high ceilings, a wall of windows about
15 feet high that opened for ventilation. |
 |
| |
|
 |
The view was expansive, a panorama of green Bavarian hills.
The weather was divine, about 65 degrees most days with showers
that passed quickly followed by sunshine. The people of the
town were very friendly and happy to host this group of artists.
We had an exhibition in the old town hall, a refurbished historic
building that was equipped perfectly for an art exhibition.
It had halogen lighting, white walls, big windows. There was
a very elegant opening with press coverage, speeches, presentations,
awards, very good food and drink. |
 |
 |
| |
|
| We visited Munich's fine art museums, where Professor Phil
gave us very informative explanations regarding the use of
the Mische technique in some of the masterpieces. Another
day we went to the ruins of a picturesque castle, saw the
Glass Forest, hiked up a rocky mountain where we could see
to the Czech Republic, then hiked down through the Bavarian
Forest. One of the German artists invited us to her home,
where we were completely enchanted by her creative world.
She provided wine and fine food amidst a colorful fantasy
of flowers and sculptures. |
 |
| |
|
 |
The final day of the seminar was capped off by the town's
festival celebrating its 900th anniversary. After watching
a procession of oompah musicians and renaissance characters,
we sat at long tables and ate grilled chickens. At one game
booth, boys bowled using wooden balls and pins, much as it
must have been done centuries ago. The dancers performed medieval
steps on the stage while around the corner a German group
played perfect country western music from the USA. There was
even an Elvis impersonator in the wee hours! Hundreds of doves
were released into the sky as we all cried out in delight,
and nature provided us with a lovely rainbow over our hotel
as a fitting farewell. |
